It was a big beautiful 150 (?) year old, Gothic style church the town just recently demolished. It was awful, complete carnage. Oh well, it gave me something to belly ache about for 2 weeks!

I went up to Palermo this past weekend to celebrate Easter w/ Nane. The night I arrived, there was a full moon (one day passed) above Gampy's old store. It was big and beautiful...I swear.

Ginny brought Lilly's to the church on Sunday.

And this is proof that, yes indeed-y, I DID accompany her. (And, NO, that's not the front lobby of a nearby pub. If you look close enough, you can see Christ in the background...I swear.)

Then, we went to the Maine Asian Buffet in Waterville for our "holiday feast." And gorged on crab rangoons, chicken and beef in various fried forms, yellow rice with peas, green beans, broccoli bits, oodles o' slippery noodles, cream puffs and 4 scoops of ice cream between the two of us. Ugh, but so dee-lish.

My dear Miguelito is 21. Hard to believe. I stopped myself from sharing w/ him the "the day you were born..." details. Though I do remember...I came home from church, of all places, with a classmate. My Dad was pouring champagne with a smile, the house was filled with blue balloons. When I returned to school the following Monday, they announced over the loud speaker that I had had an addition to my family. I was called "Aunt Catherine" for the first time. Little did I know then, what an honor that title would be. Happy b-day, doll.

I know on average, blog's are meant to share the more joyous happenings in life...but I can't lie, I've had better evenings. Perhaps it was the last roll of TP that kicked it off. Oh, how they disappear so quickly...

Then, there's the perpetually unorganizable (if that's even a word) spots that seem to lurk around every corner of my apartment...(oooh, suddenly I feel so exposed).

After belly achin' a bit, I cracked open a cold beer, put a sweet Gillian Welch CD on repeat, fetched a mighty din-din and reminded myself I have tomorrow off. Suddenly, all seemed right with the world. Even when the yoke splits...

SWK year # 1

Oddly enough, the SWK Staff party took place on the very same day as my 1 year anniversary with the company. Amazing. I pretended the gathering was in my honor. Well, we DID get one free drink ticket which I suppose is just as good. It took place in a very cool spot in South Berwick, ME called "The Red Barn," where there was a big ol' slate fire place or two, natural wood throughout and plenty of scrumptious tulips (even, in the ladies room.) Ms. Hogey Rogey, this one's for you. You nature nut.

There was a bit of a "buzz" in the store pre-party. We got a little goofy and played our annual game of "hide-n-seek." Where we place one of our sweet, wind-up toys in various places throughout the space for a colleague to find. A chick was the first contestant. A bit shy at first...

But eventually rose to the occasion...

then this beauty of a vessel (Burleigh ware's Asiatic pheasant print is one of my faves too) caught her eye...

and bottoms up, it's all over. Not so shy anymore, eh?

(Hey, what can I say? So, I've gone mad. But, at this point, I had been wearing the same of pair wool socks for 10 days or more and had just ingested about a half a dozen celebatory brownies before noon. Plus, it's mid-February in Maine. Which means, I haven't seen the GD sun in days, alright?)

Dana, my Boss/friend, and I went out on the town to celebrate what we assumed would be another Pats victory (I know we look like Siamese twins joined at the skull.) Regretfully, we were sorely mistaken. I even wore red, white and blue and drank Pabst Blue Ribbon (which the decor is...you guessed it R, W & B) but they still lost. Poop.

Some interesting sights along the way... top most photo is a "goose barn, " which was very cute. There was loads of snow covered geese outside (a "gaggle" you might say.) The owner of the house, I presume, was pulling 3 goats in an attempt to move their location, but they weren't havin' it. Photo below that, well, it's an old time camper, what can I say?

Well, my weary wagon FINALLY got herself an inspection sticker. With the help of a little duct tape, a sweet (and forgiving) mechanic way the hell out in Hollis, and perhaps the presence of "Our lady of Guadalupe," ( a "dark-skinned virgin," as she's called, on an air freshener I bought at an auto parts store just before inspection and swung proudly from my rear view mirror) ol' Libby-poo is legal 'til August. Sweet is right.

(Well, for my Mom really...since she is a BA-ZILLION miles away and won't be back in "God's country" to see it, for awhile.) So, this is a commode (or sometimes referred to as a "convenience" cabinet) .

Here's a bit of history for you; It served as a washstand for a washbasin. The enclosed area below was for a chamberpot (or "potty").

(I also found out, in my bit of research...a "commode" was a term used a few hundred years ago for loose women who were "agreeable" and / or "convenient," if you know what I mean. So naughty!)

Anyway, back to my point, my Mom got it years ago from my Grandfather and is about a hundred years old (+/-). Thankfully, this precious set of drawers found its way to me, proudly planted in my "living room."

The handle's one of my favorite parts. So primitive, so delicious.

Inside, it smells of wood and the candles my mom used to store there.

The "Beckett ST bunch" decided it was time for a tree, so
Jacques found us a sweet spot in So Po, near Millcreek, where we could purchase one. It was run by the Rotary club of Cape Elizabeth and So Po. If only it were possible to have a scratch-n-sniff post, this would be a perfect candidate. Sheer deliciousness.

I wanted to take THIS home w/ me too. It even has a microwave inside.

OK, no one under 18, or my Mom, can view above photo. Thought this was kinda funny. When cleaning out my back hall, I noticed this little dude taking a whiz in my candle. (I got that "piece of art" for my nieces on a trip to Brazil a few years back, only to realize upon returning home, this glass bottle-turned papier mache menace, is anatomical correct! Oops.) Needless to see, there he sits (or stands) pissing on my property.

To "putter"

Little did I know that the way I tend to spend my free time, at home, actually has a name.

Imagine my surprise when I discovered a plethora of definitions for a word I thought my Mom made up. For she is a "putterer," by making a house a home. It's the time one spends drifting from one tasks to the next, in and around the house. A little of this, a little of that. All the while, introducing beauty to the ordinary.

I just thought it was an mild case of adult ADD, and perhaps it is, but somehow it brings me a sense of peace. For instance, yesterday, I puttered. I organized my craft supplies, cleaned out a storage closet, fixed a magnet, dusted, found the perfect spot for a decorative dish. These simple acts, become reflections of who we are. The choices we make, the things we hold dear, the environments we hope to create.

Cookey, I know, but I love it. If only it were as easy to "putter" through our days, in the "outside world" as it is at home. To drift from one task to the next without a schedule or pressure to achieve a larger goal. I'm sure there's a name for that too.

OK, I know above pic is kind of creepy, but it does capture the essence of dear ol' Denny's costume. He was a white trash character of sorts, complete w/ rotting red neck teeth, a BBQ sauce stained tank top two sizes too small and a bleached blonde mullet (see photo).

This is Jake (old roommie), me, and, a former co-worker of ours at the call center, Nic. Jake was a college student in sunglasses, I was a socialite from the 20's, and Nic was a Melancholy newcomer from Eastern Europe. (Note; I am the only one dressed up).

I spent last weekend, visiting with my folks. Combining the celebration of my Dad's 64th birthday, with giving Nane some extra needed TLC and, most importantly of course, laundering countless loads of wash .

As usual up there, time went by too quickly. I seemed to find myself loading my car, soon after it was unloaded. The three of us had some seriously good times, though. Road tripping through Camden hills, gorging on homemade confections and deep fried foods, marathon thrifting and piling countless cords of wood.

Today I volunteered at a cool culinary event called the "20 Mile Meal". It took place at a spot called Turkey Hill Farm off rt 77, in Cape. The catch was that all the food served had to come from no more than...yep, you guessed it, 20 miles away.
Many of Portland's finest eateries were there, cookin' up all kinds of goodies from lobster gnocchi to a multi-colored beet medley to green soup (yep, that's all they called it.)
It certainly was an "eco-friendly" affair, the forks were made of recycled corn (huh?)

When my fam was visiting, we did have a chance to go to Evergreen Cemetery, out in the Deering area in Portland. My maternal Great Grandmother, Ethel Pearl Wescott and husband are buried there.

Bday wishes

This past weekend, my mom, sister and niece came all the way to good ol' Port city to help me celebrate the coming of another year. Unfortunately, I don't have any pics of our adventures to share, yet...
However, the following took place tonight on the back deck of one of my favorite local watering holes, The Portland Lobster Co. Where, under the gleam of a waxing Autumnal moon and countless strings of plastic lobsters (??), the crowd was serenaded with some classic bluegrass tunes by the band, "The Potato Pickers"(and I was even sung Happy Birthday!).

Sarah, one of my roommates, is the gal with the sweet red dress playing the fiddle...

And this is me, enjoying the music and a lobster dinner courtesy of my other roommate, Jacques, who refused to let me take his picture.

Liberty Tool

OK, so this may be my SECOND favorite place on the planet... Liberty Tool in Liberty, ME. It's about 20 miles west of Belfast, 10 miles east of Palermo. This three story building is full of all kinds of goodies. From buttons and bells to old Playboys and dusty LP's. Heck, they even sell tools.

The next few shots were taken this summer in Palermo. A town eighteen miles east of Augusta. Aside from being one of my favorite places on the planet, it is also the home of my maternal Grandmother (A.K.A "Nane"), my retired parents and generations of family history.
